Author Guidelines

JODDE uses general APA Style 7th Edition Style guidelines for its publications.

Templates for submissions can be downloaded here.

JOODE publishes three different article types:

Research Articles

The Research Articles Section serves as the cornerstone of scholarly discourse, featuring original contributions to the field of ODDE. These articles present findings from empirical studies, theoretical explorations, or methodological advancements, offering novel insights and expanding the boundaries of knowledge on the meso and macro levels of ODDE. Authors meticulously design their studies, adhere to rigorous methodologies, and analyze quantitative or qualitative data to draw meaningful conclusions. By disseminating cutting-edge research, the research articles section fosters intellectual exchange, promotes innovation, and advances the collective understanding of complex phenomena within the academic community.

JODDE welcomes the submission of systematic reviews, allowing an extended word limit of up to 12,000 words. To assess the quality of systematic review submissions, we apply the Quality of Evidence Synthesis Tool (QuEST) developed by Bond (2024).

Critical Reflection

The Critical Reflection Section focusing on research, practice, and leadership offers a unique perspective on the interplay between scholarly endeavors, practical applications, and leadership roles within the field of ODDE. Authors contribute insightful analyses of their experiences, examining not only the methodologies and findings of their research but also the implications for professional practice, leadership, and administration. They reflect on the challenges, successes, failures, and ethical considerations encountered in their roles as researchers, practitioners, and leaders, providing valuable lessons learned and best practices for the broader academic community. This section invites scholars to share their reflections on the dynamic relationship between research, practice, and leadership, thereby fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and promoting improvement in both academic and professional contexts.

Interviews – Oral Histories and Engaged Perspectives

The Interview Section serves as a repository of firsthand accounts and personal narratives, capturing the lived experiences and perspectives of influential individuals within the field of ODDE. These interviews offer valuable insights into historical events, cultural phenomena, and social dynamics, providing researchers with rich qualitative data for analysis. The scope of this section can be broad, encompassing interviews with scholars, practitioners, leaders, or individuals with unique expertise or perspectives relevant to ODDE. By showcasing diverse voices and personal stories, the Interview Section adds depth and context to academic discourse, enriching our understanding of complex issues and contributing to the preservation of the roots, heritage and collective memory of ODDE.

Submission Preparation Checklist

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format.  The manuscript itself does not contain the author names or other identifying information. DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME ON THE MANUSCRIPT FOR REVIEW - THE PAPER WILL BE REJECTED.
  • Author names and affiliations are provided on a separate article submission title page.
  • When available, the URLs to access references online are provided, including those for open access versions of the reference. The URLs are ready to click (e.g., https://www.jodde.org/).
  • The text is single-spaced; otherwise follows APA Style; and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end. Your abstract should be a single paragraph, single-spaced. Your abstract should typically be no more than 250 words.
  • The total length of the paper, including references, should not exceed 8,000 words.
  • Literature reviews will not be published unless they are systematic reviews. The total length of systematic reviews, including references, should not exceed 12,000 words.
The quality of systematic review submissions will be evaluated with the Quality of Evidence Synthesis Tool (QuEST) developed by Bond (2024).
  • The text otherwise adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements (APA 7th Edition).
  • Ensure your paper is blinded for review. DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME ON THE MANUSCRIPT FOR REVIEW - THE PAPER WILL BE REJECTED.   How do I ‘blind’ a paper for review? To ensure the integrity of the blind peer-review for submission to this journal, every effort should be made to prevent the identities of the authors and reviewers from being known to each other. This involves the authors, editors and reviewers (who upload documents as part of their review) checking to see if the following steps have been taken with regard to the text and the file properties: 1. The authors of the document have deleted their names from the text, with ‘Author’ and year used in the references and footnotes, instead of the authors' name, article title, etc. 2. With Microsoft Office documents, author identification should also be removed from the properties for the file (see under File in Word), by clicking on the following, beginning with File on the main menu of the Microsoft application: File > Save As > Tools (or Options with a Mac) > Security > Remove personal information from file properties on save > Save.
  • Please be sure that ALL authors are listed in the submission's metadata and that the author information is shown EXACTLY the way you want it to appear in the publication. (This is VERY important. If your paper is published, the author information is automatically transferred to the Table of Contents.)  You should not include your identifying information in the manuscript itself.  That information is stored in the submissions metadata.
