Introduction to JODDE

Following the publication of the Handbook of Open, Distance, and Digital Education (ODDE) in January 2023, a group of colleagues from the Center of Open Education Research (COER) at the University of Oldenburg in Germany decided to launch a new open access journal of ODDE. The term is comprised of open and distance education to clearly mark the historical origin of recent online education, and digital education to capture newer and emerging manifestations of teaching and learning in the digital transformation of educational institutions.

Following the 3M Framework[1], the focus and scope of the Journal of Open, Distance, and Digital Education (JODDE) are placed on the macro- and meso-levels of educational systems and institutions, including papers reporting on qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods studies; critical reflections; systematic reviews; theoretical or conceptual papers; and position papers. Papers on micro-level practice, for example, evaluating the impact of single teaching and learning interventions without an institutional or system dimension, are not within the scope of JODDE.

Rooted in an ethos of openness, and recognizing the diverse socio-economic, cultural, and infrastructural landscapes in different parts of the world, the journal aims to amplify a global dialogue and avoid the underrepresentation of diverse critical voices. The global team of editors and editorial board members coming from all continents on Earth resonates with this diverse approach to academic publishing.

JODDE is directed by a team of Chief-Editors (in alphabetical order):

  • Dianne Conrad (Athabasca University, Canada)
  • Michael Kerres (University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany)
  • Kyungmee Lee (Seoul National University, South Korea)
  • David Lim (Open University of Malaysia, Malaysia)
  • Paul Prinsloo (University of South Africa, South Africa)
  • Patricia Slagter van Tryon (East Carolina University, USA)
  • Junhong Xiao (Open University of Shantou, China)
  • Olaf Zawacki-Richter (University of Oldenburg, Germany)

Framework for the Call

JODDE focuses on building a sustained open research venue for scholarly works in support of disseminating theoretical foundations of ODDE development in higher education

Therefore the team of Chief Editors of JODDE presents the following call for papers focusing in macro and meso levels of ODDE.

Macrolevel:

Theories and systems, including history, global perspectives and internationalization of ODDE.

Meso-level:

Institutional perspectives, including management and organization, leadership, change and infrastructure, quality assurance, and support systems.

Manuscripts should be submitted through the JODDE submission portal following the Author Guidelines.

Publication Schedule:

The journal adopts the rolling submission and publication model. Authors can submit their research papers whenever they are ready, which, once accepted, will be published immediately without waiting for a fixed issue.
