Up to now, Johannes Pauli’s comical tales have often been either reduced to their moralisatio or, in the case of tensions between narratio and moralisatio, seen as poorly composed. Upon closer inspection however, it becomes apparent that Pauli’s tales are highly complex constructs which stimulate a differentiated interpretation through sense irritations. Their moral plane thus becomes multi-layered and serves various levels of abstraction within a comic tale. This study illustrates this complexity with an example of the representation of play as a sin.
