In the run-up to the final battle of the ‘Joie de la curt’ adventure, Erec tells his opponent Mabonagrin a fable, without ‘schematically’ adding a pro- or epimythion that would provide the fable with an explicit moralisatio. This contribution examines the significance of the omission of a moralisatio and how Erec’s narration of the fable relates to the narratio of the novel as a whole.
