‘Counting’ and ‘recounting’ are closely connected in terms of cultural history, and this can also be proven for the Middle Ages. This contribution makes a new historical-narratological attempt. For the purpose of theoretical experiment, various fields of tension between quantity and quality are explored for Medieval literary narrative and its examination within the framework of Medieval narrative research, which not only allow for a different understanding of Medieval narrative. With a view to the contours of historical-narratological work, they also expose further differentiations which make traditional epistemological dichotomies emphatically questionable.
