Using the late medieval life of the virgin ›Do got der vater geschuff Adam und Eua‹ as an example, the article observes which representational possibilities can be gained through a narrative mode that is characterized as ›commentarial‹ narration. To this end, I propose a concept of commentary that detaches it from the idea of a belated, retrospective textual element and proposes a systematic understanding of commentary as a gesture of differentiation. Following on from this, some of the representational possibilities gained in implementing this gesture are described.
