Desire for revenge and approaches towards institutional control at King Nobles’ court of justice

Medieval beast epics form a discourse on the foundations of social and political order. Based on a comparative analysis of the various versions of the branche ›Le Jugement de Renart‹, which differ in their staging of counseling scenes at the royal court of King Noble, this article encourages following this discourse into the complex transmission of the ›Roman de Renart‹. With regard to later branches, it becomes clear that the work on scenes of counsel not only contributes to authorizing the political within the literary discourse but may also have aimed at follow-up communication at the courts.
