Brevitas

The ›Brevitas‹ series is the publication organ of the scientific society Brevitas. The scientific society Brevitas (e.V.) was founded in 2018 and is dedicated to the study of pre-modern minor epic poetry. ›Minor epic‹ is understood as an umbrella term for pre-modern texts that are characterised by relative brevity, conciseness and the possibility of an overall reception at the play (such as a single performance, a single act of reading). In terms of content, many of these texts are located in the area of tension between ranting and seriousness. Minor epic accordingly subsumes divergent groups of texts such as fairy tales, bispels, buffoonery, miracle tales, legends, but also more discursive forms such as miner's speeches, spiritual bispel speeches, riddles, disputes, proverbs, etc.

The editors of the series are the members of the Brevitas board; individual issues may have specific editors. ›Brevitas‹ is published every two years, linked to the society's conferences. If the Board of Directors agrees, the publication of further, thematically free articles in an appendix is just as possible as a complete issue independent of a society conference. The series will be published in co-operation with the ›Beiträge zur mediävistischen Erzählforschung‹ (BmE) as ›Special Issues Brevitas‹. ›Brevitas‹ can thus benefit from the established digital infrastructure of BmE. Brevitas' is solely responsible for the content.
